Gate Additions: Choice Importance
Making the right choices when it comes to gate additions (such as hinges and posts) is of utmost importance to ensure the sturdiness of your gate and prevent issues further down the line. Here, you can find out everything you need to know about selecting an addition perfect for your gate. At Ruby, we want to ensure that it's right for you, the first time, with no fuss.

Each gate has different requirements. To calculate the best post sizing for your gate, you can follow our measuring guides. When selecting your gate sizing on the product page, our recommendation of correct sizing will come up as an extra.
Measuring your Posts

Ensuring that the post is installed into the ground correctly is vital. If concreting, 1/3 of the post will need to go into the ground. Because of this ground installation, it is important to account for extra height of the post needed to match the gate. This will ensure that your gate can stand strong throughout harsh weather and fully support your gate, in both weight and swing. We recommend having your posts about 900mm into the ground.
Securing your Posts

Having correctly sized posts for your gate can impact its functionality, as the posts act as a form of 'backbone' for the gate's structure. It is important to have correctly sized posts to ensure that the gate can handle the weight of the gate and remain upright in harsher weather conditions.
Functionality

Having an incorrectly sized post can lead to structural failure. This includes sagging and leaning, and could result in your gate being unusable shortly after purchase. Timber expands and contracts over time, and if the posts are the wrong size, it could cause your gate to lose the stability holding it up.

Tee hinges are a popular choice for lightweight gates, providing excellent support and maintaining a traditional appearance. Tee hinges should be about half the width of the gate. Featuring a rectangular knuckle that should be fitted to the gate post or frame, and a tapered strap that fits to the gate, this hinge is a great option.

Band and hook hinges are a sturdy and dependable option for entrance gates. These hinges come with two separate parts: The hinge plate – a rectangular metal plate that attaches to the gate post; and the band – a long metal strip that secures to the gate itself. The hinge plate offers a hook that allows the band to slide over it with ease, creating a fantastic pivot point for the gate.

Adjustable hinges are similar to band and hook hinges, but offer flexibility after installation, and are well-suited for field gates. You can change the gate's position down the line with these hinges, ensuring an easy fix for any signs of sagging under the gate's weight.

The correct ironwork sizing will show on the gate product page when selecting your sizing, with Ruby. However, if you're still unsure, we recommend that the sizing of your hinge is at least 1/3 of the size of the gate width. Higher traffic gates require stronger hinges, similarly with heavier gates, to ensure that your gate remains structurally sound with usage.
