Severe Weather Product Care Guide

Severe Weather Maintenance Guide

To maintain the integrity and aesthetics of your outdoor structures during severe weather, follow these detailed maintenance guidelines.

Each section includes recommended products, techniques, and suggested frequencies for optimal care.

1. General Tips for Severe Weather Preparation

Inspect and Repair Before Storms:

- Perform a comprehensive inspection at least once a month during severe weather seasons.

- Look for loose screws, cracks, rust, or warping in wood or metal. If there are any damaged sections, get these replaced as soon as possible to avoid structural damage.

2. Snow and Ice Maintenance

- Clear Snow Buildup Promptly: Use a soft brush or plastic shovel to remove snow from gates and fences to prevent excess weight that can cause sagging or structural damage.

- Avoid Salt Directly on Surfaces: Salt can corrode metal components or damage finishes. Use sand or non-corrosive de-icers near gates and fences instead.

- Lubricate Hinges and Locks: Ice formation can hinder gate movement. Apply a silicone-based lubricant to prevent freezing.

Pergolas & Sheds:

- Remove Roof Snow Load: For pergolas and shed roofs, regularly clear snow to prevent collapse. Use a roof rake to avoid climbing or damaging the structure.

- Check Drainage Paths: Ensure water from melting snow drains away from the shed's base to prevent rot or flooding.

Planters:

- Protect Roots: If planters are not frost-proof, wrap them in insulating material or move them to a sheltered area to prevent cracks caused by freezing.

3. Heavy Rain Maintenance

Fences & Cladding:

- Ensure Proper Drainage: Check the ground around fences and cladding for pooling water. Improve drainage by adding gravel or soil slopes as needed.

- Inspect for Rot or Corrosion: After heavy rain, inspect wooden elements for rot and metal parts for rust. Address issues with wood preservatives or rust-proof paint.

Gates:

- Avoid Waterlogged Areas: If the gate base is in a low-lying area, install drainage channels or lift the gate on adjustable hinges to prevent sticking or damage.

- Reinforce Weak Points: Check for loose joints or warping caused by water absorption and secure these areas immediately.

Pergolas:

- Waterproof Covers: Install or use a waterproof canopy to protect pergolas during persistent rain. Ensure covers are taut to prevent water pooling.

- Check Post Stability: Saturated soil can weaken pergola foundations. Reinforce posts with additional bracing or adjust footings as needed.

Sheds:

- Seal Cracks or Gaps: Apply weatherproofing sealant to any visible gaps to prevent water ingress.

- Elevate Base: Ensure sheds sit on a raised platform or concrete slab to avoid water damage from pooling at the foundation.

4. Windstorm Maintenance

Gates & Fences:

- Secure Panels: Reinforce loose fence panels and gates with additional brackets or supports before high winds arrive.

- Remove Lightweight Objects Nearby: Clear debris or lightweight planters near fences and gates to prevent wind borne damage.

Pergolas:

- Anchor the Structure: Ensure pergola posts are securely fastened to the ground. Add temporary braces for additional stability during storms.

- Remove Hanging Items: Take down decorative elements or hanging plants that could act as sails in strong winds.

Sheds:

- Fasten Doors and Windows: Lock shed doors and secure any loose windows with additional latches to prevent wind damage.

- Clear Surroundings: Remove loose objects near the shed to avoid them becoming projectiles.
